Hundreds of firefighters from all around the state of Georgia, including Bryan County, were in Savannah last week for some additional training. After the training was over, it was time for a little friendly competition.
The Georgia State Firefighters Association held its annual firefighter competition at the Savannah Civic Center Aug. 6 and the teams got to put their skills to the test outside the Savannah Civic Center.
More than 60 firefighters with nine teams from around the state battled it out for top honors at the annual firefighters competition.
Bryan County Fire/EMS competed this year for the first time against teams like Hall County, Macon-Bibb, Savannah Fire and Thunderbolt, which have competed for 27 consecutive years.
“I am very proud of our team members,” Chief Jim Anderson said. “They competed against veteran teams and held their own”
Bryan County placed third in the busted hose event, which entailed having to replace a section of busted fire hose in the fastest time.
While very proud of the team, Anderson said it was not about bringing home a trophy. It was about team building and camaraderie that is built from friendly competition. All of the team members are already looking forward to next year’s competition, he said.
Unfortunately for the home town teams, the Hall County Fire Department from north Georgia actually took first place in the competition, but everyone had a great time.
