During the week of Aug. 9-14, First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville will celebrate its ministry anniversaries at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Victor Couzens Sr., of the Inspirational Baptist Church in Cincinnati, will speak Monday through Friday. At 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, the Rev. William Miller, of New Fellowship Baptist Church in Glennville, will speak.
“The idea is to foster unity wherein each church ministry supports the other for the week,” said First Calvary Missionary Pastor Dr. Sinclair Thorne. “On Sunday, Aug. 15, we will have one big banquet after the 11 a.m. service where everybody comes together.”
Couzens has been in the ministry since he was 14. He began his first pastoral ministry at the age of 19. Couzens, who speaks at national events, has served as the third vice president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.-Young Pastors and Ministers Division.
Since July 2000, he has served as the bishop and senior pastor of the Inspirational Baptist Church. The church experienced phenomenal growth under his leadership, growing from 300 to 1,800 members. It is recognized as one of the fastest-growing churches in the tri-state area.
Couzens reshaped the church’s mission by developing new ministries, employing additional staff and securing new facilities. Members moved into their new 1,600-seat, $10 million sanctuary in April 2009.
“As a church, we provide spiritual guidance and practical resources to empower individuals and families,” Couzens said. “We’ll address the spiritual needs through the 50 active ministries currently in place. We’ll address the economic needs by creating new jobs and launching new businesses, and address the social needs through recreational opportunities and networking to build new relationships.”
On Monday, Aug. 9, Couzens will begin Calvary Missionary Baptist’s weeklong celebration by focusing on the mission, nursing and evangelism explosion ministries. On Tuesday, the church will recognize the bereavement, hospitality, transportation and usher ministries. On Wednesday, the laymen, tape, tutorial, and youth ministries will be front and center. On Thursday, church members will celebrate the deacon, deaconess and trustee ministries. On Friday, the minister spouses, pastor’s aide and recovery ministries will be recognized. Saturday’s celebration will spotlight the choir ministry.
“We are inviting pastors, officers and congregations — and especially ministries — to be our special guests during the week. We look forward to seeing you as we celebrate another year of year,” Thorne said.
