Where has the year gone? It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating Christmas and then the New Year. And later this week we will reach the half-way point of 2010. That seems so difficult to believe.
The Steve Miller Band used to sing, “Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future.” We know that to be true. Young children, and even teenagers and young adults, don’t always see it that way. For them time creeps along. They are forever waiting for some big event or season in life.
But from my perspective, life is hurtling by at the speed of sound. And there are so many times that I want to cry out for it to stop. There are moments when I would love to exit the merry-go-round that is life. But I cannot.
The Bible tells us that God has “numbered our days.” There is so much meaning packed into those words that I could not possibly extrapolate all of them in one brief article. But this much I know to be true. God is watching over me, and He has my best interest in mind.
There are things that happen in life that frustrate me. Things don’t go well for one of my children. My retirement account lost money last week. The dog dug another crater in the back yard. The truck is leaking oil. And then there are the things that really matter. Someone I love is diagnosed with cancer. Another friend lost his job. And on it goes.
It is so encouraging and comforting to know that God has numbered my days. He knows my future, and it does not have Him worried. And the reason for that is simple. He holds my future in His hand. No matter where I go, and no matter what happens to me, none of it will catch God off guard. And He is preparing me for those moments each day that I live.
That is why it is so important that I listen to His voice. That is why it is so important that I obey His commands. He knows what is best for me. He knows the things I need to do and say. And so it makes sense that the best way for me to know these things is to stay close to Him.
When my boys were younger I required that they hold my hand in certain public places. That way we would not be separated. How I need to hold to God’s mighty and powerful hand at every point in life. It would also be best for you.
I challenge you to stay close to the One who loves you and wants the best for you. He can be trusted. He will take care of you.
