It really was amazing how it happened. I’m not sure what he did to change. But when I was about 15 years old my dad was not very smart. He had all kinds of beliefs and rules that were old fashioned and foolish. I even got to the point that I prayed that he would get smarter and more up to date. It only took about 10 years, but that is actually what happened. By the time I was 25 he was one of the smartest men I knew. And he had not even gone to school. He just got smarter and wiser.
Right. So many of you know exactly where this is headed. My dad probably did get smarter and wiser during those 10 years, because he had 10 more years to learn and grow.
But the fact is that he had great wisdom and understanding of life when I was 15. I was the knucklehead who did not understand life, though I thought I knew it all.
How do you gain wisdom?
Many will tell you that wisdom comes from experience, and experience comes with age, and there is some truth in that.
Some will tell you that wisdom comes thro ugh education. Some will say that there are people who are naturally wise.
But the Bible says something else. In Proverbs 4:5 we read, “Get wisdom.”
That’s good advice for anyone. But from where does wisdom come. Proverbs 2:6 says, “The Lord gives wisdom,” and James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God…” The truth is that true wisdom comes from God.
We can gain certain kinds of wisdom from our experiences and our families. But true wisdom, the kind that will change our lives for the best, only comes from the Lord. I don’t know about you, but I know that I need wisdom every day. There are some decisions I need to make that call for more than the knowledge I have learned in school, or even on the job. There are times when only God’s wisdom will do.
And the good news is this. God is willing to give me that wisdom. All I have to do is ask.
And yet I am sometimes so stubborn that I try to do things on my own. I need to be reminded to ask God for wisdom. Perhaps you do, too. If so, here is a gentle reminder. Ask God for the wisdom you need to face life each day. Then you will have true wisdom.
