“The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
—Titus 2:3-5, King James Version
On this Mother’s Day, as we salute biological mothers, let us also honor women who serve as spiritual mothers in churches. These women play an important role in their churches and in the lives of congregants.
Parts of the Bible talk about the older women of the church and they are often referred to as “mothers.”
Church mothers’ duties vary, but they mostly help to nurture members, especially children. Church mothers engage in special ministry and missionary projects. They serve as guiding lights to help other Christians see the spirit of God. The women are called to high positions and are God’s frontline ambassadors in the church.
Church mothers show others how to live holy lives that are pleasing to God. Their love for mankind is unique and knows no boundaries.
With the wisdom gained through years of living and experience, they help others. Church mothers are wise counselors and teachers, combining Biblical truths with everyday, practical points. These precious “jewels” in the church have much wisdom to impart.
Recall a story from the book of Ruth where Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law, helped Ruth transition after the deaths of their husbands. Ruth followed Naomi back to her hometown. The young, pagan girl had an intense love for her mother-in-law. Likewise, when young, unsaved people come into church, church mothers make them want to stay and become a part of God’s family.
Church mothers often attract people in need. With a soothing words or gestures, the women know how to calm situations without much attention or fanfare.
In these tumultuous times, church mothers are needed to assist congregations and perform tasks in a diverse, changing society. Let us commend these blessed women for the roles they take on and for the love they offer to church members and visitors. Happy Mother’s Day.
