Relay For Life of North Bryan is gearing up for its nightlong fundraising event set for Friday, while Relay For Life of Richmond Hill is celebrating the success of its event last weekend.
North Bryan’s overnight festivities will be at Hendrix Park in Ellabell and will begin with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday and conclude around 7 a.m. Saturday.
Events will include a survivors’ hay ride with local law enforcement and emergency responders and even a hog calling contest.
“All events are really community oriented,” Victoria Ten Broeck, community manager for the American Cancer Society, said. “We’re planning for live music, and entertainment usually starts around 5 (p.m.) while people are arriving and getting signed up.”
Ten Broeck said 10 teams are already signed up for the year and more than 400 people are expected to participate in this weekend’s event. Last year, the North Bryan Relay event raised around $40,000, she said.
Meanwhile, Ten Broeck said Relay For Life of Richmond Hill roped in more than $80,000 last weekend during its “Ropin’ in a Cure” event at J.F. Gregory Park.
“Over 1,000 people attended,” she said. “And we have 36 teams. That’s the most we’ve ever had in Richmond Hill.”

Of all who attended, about 100 survivors were signed up for the survivor’s lap that helped kick-off the nightlong fundraiser, she said.
And though they’ve raised $80,000 already, Ten Broeck said teams can raise money until August and funds raised are expected to reach more than $83,000.
