ATLANTA - The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that a 24-year-old soldier from Fayette County was killed in Iraq.

The department said Saturday that 1st Lt. Robert W. Collins, of Tyrone, died in Mosul, Iraq, when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Officials said Pfc. William A. Blount, 21, of Petal, Miss., was also killed in the attack on Wednesday.

Both soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Stewart.

Collins graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 2004 and West Point Military Academy in 2008. He was engaged to be married, according to the Fayette County Citizen.
