Editor’s note: Meet Sharon Lape, who was recently named the paraprofessional of the year at Lanier Primary School for the 2010-2011 school year. Here’s her story.

My name is Sharon Lape and I have been a paraprofessional for eight years, five of them at Lanier Primary School. I have been married to my wonderful husband Daniel for almost 24 years. I have two beautiful daughters, Jamie, a junior at Bryan County High and Melinda, a junior at Georgia Southern University. I was born and raised in Ohio. I graduated from Williams Henry Harrison High School in 1983.
I define a paraprofessional as an individual who assists the teacher in everyday tasks that she needs to accomplish her teaching. I feel a good paraprofessional is someone who knows what the teacher expects from them. An individual who can take over the class if need be. A good paraprofessional is someone who works well with the teacher and students.
The hardest part of my job is the last day of school when you have to say goodbye to the children. The teachers I have worked with will agree with this. The easiest part is coming to work every day. I don’t like to miss work.
Lanier Primary is special to me because everyone really cares about you. Being a military wife you are left alone for long periods of time. Since my family is in Ohio, I only have my husband (sometimes) and my girls. The faculty and staff at Lanier make me feel as if they are my family.
I believe Bryan County Schools have an excellent reputation because the teachers, paraprofessionals and the administration go the extra mile for their students.
