Fundraisers are in the works for Richmond Hill 2-year-old Christopher Logan Vance, who is fighting for his life and undergoing chemotherapy at Memorial Hospital after being diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer.

He was diagnosed just two weeks ago.

Logan is the grandson of South Bryan Animal Control Officer Tommy Foster.

Foster’s wife Cecilia discovered two lumps under Logan’s ribs about two weeks ago, which coincided with the youngster complaining of stomach pain. She rushed him to Memorial. A biopsy and CAT scan revealed that he was suffering from Hepatoblastoma, reportedly an extremely rare form of cancer that rapidly spread to 85 percent of Logan’s liver.

"The doctor told us that if she (Cecilia) hadn’t found it (lumps), Logan wouldn’t be with us today," Tommy Foster said. "Our lives changed overnight. That’s my life right there."

Logan lives at home in Richmond Hill with his grandparents, mother and siblings, ages 5 and 3. His mother, Gwen Duncan, does not have medical insurance. Foster said if the chemotherapy does not work, Logan will need to be hospitalized in Atlanta while awaiting a liver transplant.

Foster’s friends at the Bryan County Fire Department are putting together fundraisers, including a boot drive outside local grocery stores Jan. 29-30 and a public safety day at First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, with all the proceeds going toward Logan’s medical expenses.

"We (BCFD) all agreed that we had to do something," Capt. Asa Clay said. "It just breaks my heart whenever I hear of a child going through something like this. We encourage the community to come out and do what they can to help little Logan."

The safety day event will include a blood drive with the Blood Alliance. The blood will be turned in to Memorial Hospital in exchange for a reduction in Logan’s medical bills. The event is also slated to include activities for kids, including a bouncy playground.
