Early voting in the Richmond Hill municipal election netted between 250-300 votes by 5 p.m. on Friday, said Elections Superintendent Sam Davis.

Davis said 248 voters had cast ballots in the city’s election by noon on Friday and he expected voting to remain steady throughout the end of the business day.

In contrast, early voting in the special election did not produce as enthusiastic a turnout across Bryan County.

Only 384 people voted early in the special election, according to the Bryan County Voter Registrar’s office. Four of those voters returned mail-out ballots.

Richmond Hill voters will choose their next mayor between candidates Floyd Hilliard, the current mayor pro tem, and Harold Fowler, a formal councilman. Longtime Mayor Richard Davis is stepping down.

Two city council seats are also up for grabs. Incumbent Post 1 Councilwoman JoAnn Robinson-Bickley faces opponent Van Hunter, and Darryl Petermann and Russ Carpenter are jostling for the Post 2 seat left vacant by Hilliard.

In the special election, former State Rep. Buddy Carter is running against Dr. Billy Hair, a former Chatham County Commission Chairman, for the District 1 State Senate seat.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. City voters can cast ballots in the municipal election at the Wetlands Center. All county residents registered to vote should go to their precincts.
