ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta police are increasing patrols around the Georgia Tech campus because several students have been robbed at gunpoint over the last few months.

Police and university officials said during a news conference Tuesday that they do not believe college students are being targeted but are likely to be out at night when robbers commonly strike.

A Georgia Tech student was robbed about 1 a.m. Tuesday in downtown Atlanta when he was walking to his apartment. The robber demanded everything the student was carrying but only got away with a pack of cigarettes.

On Saturday night, a student had his iPhone, money and sunglasses stolen by an armed robber.

Police announced Tuesday they've made two arrests in the May carjacking of 23-year-old Georgia Tech student Patrick Whaley, who was shot in the back.

The suspects face several charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping and armed robbery.

Charges are pending against a third person, who is in custody on unrelated charges.
