Both the boys and girls BCHS tennis teams swept Liberty County on Monday, as they did in an earlier meeting on March 22.

Both teams are having a phenomenal season with high hopes as they approach the regionals. The boys are boasting a 10-1 record while the girls are 9-2.

Girls players Ashley Barfield (10-0) and Caitlyn Crowe (9-0) are undefeated thus far this season. On the boys side, David Cook (10-0) and Scooter Anderson (10-0) are also on an undefeated streak.

"The girls have a shot to go in as the number one seed," said Coach Tommy Gibbs. "We’re waiting to see what Savannah Country Day does, but they’ve definitely locked up a minimum of a two seed going into the regional tournament. The boys are going to go in as two or three, depending on how Claxton does."

"Our team has never been this good," said senior Josh Stanfield. "The BCHS usually have a losing record. My first year, I don’t even think we won a match, and this year it’s hard to lose one. This program has come a long way this year."

"The girls have worked really hard to be where they are right now," said junior Ashley Barfield. "I was so inexperienced last year, but this year I’m undefeated. That says a lot for Coach Gibbs and the program as a whole right now."

On Monday, each team won with a 5-0 victory.

Singles victories were scored by Josh Stanfield, David Cook, Scooter Anderson, Melinda Lape, Caitlin Crowe and Jenna Howell. Double Victories were scored by Michael Kennedy and Derek Tucker, Kenny Hagan and Cody Gunter, Ashley Barfield and Kari Groover, and Ashly Strickland and Lindsay Anderson.

The March 22 encounter with Liberty mirrored Monday’s results with 5-0 victories for both the boys and girls.

Singles victories were scored by Trey Boatright, Stanfield, Gunter, Crowe, Lape, and Howell. Double Victories were scored by David Cook and Anderson, Kennedy and Tucker, Barfield and Groover, and Strickland and Anderson.

Monday’s matches marked the end of the regular season for BCHS tennis.

To stay in tune, the teams are visiting RHHS today for some practice sets. The region tournament is slated for April 16 at Savannah Country Day and Armstrong Atlantic University.
