“The Lego Movie,” rated PG, will be shown free at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Bryant Commons amphitheater, 438 Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville.

The showing launches a Hinesville Downtown Development Authority “Movie in the Park” series. The next movie, “Grown Ups,” will be shown Aug. 29. 

Parking will cost $1 per car. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Spectators can bring chairs and blankets. All children must be accompanied by adults. No coolers or alcohol allowed. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Corner Grill

There will be no bowling at Stewart Lanes Bowling Center until Sept. 3 as new pinsetters are installed. However, the Corner Grill there will continue to offer food and beverages onsite and to-go.

The grill is closed Tuesdays. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, noon-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

Hunter survey

An online Army MWR Services Survey to determine service and recreation needs at Hunter will launch Aug. 11.

Active duty, spouses, retirees and DoD civilians who work, live or play at Hunter are invited to take the survey. A direct survey link will be provided later.

MWR operates Tominac Fitness Center, the outdoor pool, golf course, outdoor recreation, School Age Services and the Auto Skills Center, to name a few. Child, Youth and School Services operations also are under FMWR. Survey responses are voluntary and confidential.

The survey will take 10-15 minutes.

 

Get Golf Ready

Enroll now for this season’s second Get Golf Ready, scheduled at Hunter Golf Course on Aug. 12, 14, 16, 19 and 21. Sign-ups will be accepted until Aug. 11.

Get Golf Ready is open to beginners who are looking for instruction. It costs $149 and includes a one-month membership at the course, a dozen golf balls, and five one-hour instruction sessions covering mechanics, rules and etiquette.

Football jersey party

CYSS-registered members in grades 6-12 are invited to wear their favorite team jersey and enjoy a back-to-school party sponsored by HIRED.

The free party will be from 7-10 p.m. Aug. 15 at Youth Activity Center. Music will be provided by DJ Evolution. There will be a dance competition and more.

Float trips  

Join Outdoor Recreation on a canoe/kayak float down a coastal river on Aug. 16.

All equipment is provided and lifeguards will be on the trips. Bring your own lunch. The $20 per person cost includes use of canoe or kayak.

Volunteer at Taylors Creek

On Aug. 18, join the volunteers who help keep the clubhouse and grounds at Taylors Creek Golf Course in shape. There plenty of tasks available. You’ll get a gift for your time.

Flag football

Units interested in fielding a team in the 2014 Unit Level Flag Football Season at Stewart and Hunter beginning in September should submit a memo to the Bennett Sports Complex or Squires Sports Complex by Aug. 22.

There is no charge. The season begins Sept. 8, with games to be played at 6, 7 and 8 p.m.

‘Monsters University’

“Monsters University” (rated G) is the next featured film in the summer outdoor movies series at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area (Highway 144).

The free show starts at 8 p.m. Aug. 22. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. For more information, call 767-4316.

 

Top of the Rock Run

Registration is under way for the Top of the Rock 5K and 10K Run for Resiliency, a chipped race that is open to the public.

The run will have 10 age categories for men and women, plus a 10K team competition for active duty with a minimum of 10 members from the same company.

All participants will receive T-shirts and trophies will be awarded.

Register online only at www.ACTIVE.com. Participants are asked to register by Sept. 3. Team pre-registration ends Sept. 4.

The run begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 6 between Newman Fitness Center and the Quick Track. The cost to register before event is $25 for DoD ID cardholders and $30 for civilians. Day-of-race registration costs $40.

Figure contest

Early registration is under way for The Rock Body Building and Figure Contest Nov. 1 at Woodruff Theater on Fort Stewart.

Weigh-in will be at 8 a.m., prejudging at 10 and the finals at 6:30 p.m.

The cost until Oct. 17 is $25, and $35 later. There is an additional crossover fee of $15. Sign up at Newman Fitness Center.

Awards will be presented seven divisions.

Powerlifting

Registration is under way for the Stewart/Hunter “Bend-the-Bar” Powerlifting and Bench Press Challenge on Sept. 20.

The competition is open to men and women, who will compete in 12 weight classes. Participants must be at least 16.

T-shirts will be given to each paying participant and prizes will be awarded in all weight classes. Entry fee is $15 per person until Sept. 15 and $20 later.

Babysitting course

Teens (ages 13-18) can become certified babysitters by completing the SKIES CYSSitter Teenage Babysitter Course from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 16, 23.

The course is free and will be at SKIES Unlimited.

Participants must attend both days to be certified, and a minimum of five students is needed. Register at CYSS Parent Central Services.
