A Fort Stewart Soldier was killed and his daughter critically injured on a beach in Venice, Florida, when a plane crashed onto them.

Sgt. 1st Class Ommy Irizarry, 36, of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, died while walking on the beach with his nine-year-old daughter when a plane struck them Sunday afternoon, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. The daughter was listed in critical condition as of 1:30 p.m. today.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. Any queries about the investigation should be directed to those agencies.

Sgt. 1st Class Irizarry was a platoon sergeant assigned to Fort Stewart's Warrior Transition Battalion. He joined the Army in July 2002 and arrived at Fort Stewart in October 2010. He had two deployments, both to Iraq.

The Irizarry family was in Florida celebrating its ninth wedding anniversary.  We are deeply saddened by the news and remain in contact with the family.  A casualty assistance officer is on his way to Florida to assist the family.

"This is a heart-wrenching situation, especially losing a loved one while on vacation to celebrate a family milestone," said 3rd Infantry Division and Stewart-Hunter commander Maj. Gen. Mike Murray. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Irizarry family."
