I was in the car listening to a local Christian radio station when I was drawn to words of a song I’d never heard before.
The words were, “Make me broken so I can be healed.” My first gut reaction was to cry out, “No,” because what I really want is God’s favor and good things to always come my way. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that what I want is not always what I need. When the good times come, it’s easy to just say a passing “thank you.” But it’s when things aren’t going so well that God gets our attention. We cry out to God for help when we are broken, and the end result is that we gain God’s favor. Isaiah 66:2 states, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit and who tremble at my word.”
We live such busy lives, and the tendency is to go on about our business and forget about nurturing our relationship with our heavenly Father. We forget about taking out time to worship our creator and to thank him for his many blessings. When God allows things to come into our lives that humble us, we acknowledge him as our helper and deliverer.
True healing takes place during the valleys of our lives, not on the mountaintop.
