The Bryan County High School girls’ basketball team has been on a bit of a roll lately.
The Lady Redskins’ won their last two regular season games to finish 12-16 overall and earn a first-round bye in the Region 2-AA tournament.
The most recent win, a 56-40 shellacking of Long County on Saturday, occurred on senior night, and fittingly, seniors Rita Ivey and Kolbie Graves had big games.
Ivey led the team with 12 points, six rebouns, four steals and a pair of assists. Graves chipped in six points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
“It was good to see Kolbie Graves and Rita Ivey have good games on senior night,” said BCHS girls’ coach Mario Mincey. “Thse two ladies have been in our program since middle school and I am thankful to have them as leaders.”
Also chipping in were Brianna Smith, who added eight points, four teals and five assists, while Kaylin Leggett, Yasmaine Crawford and Kaylee Perks chipped in six points each.
The win wrapped up the No. 3 seed for the Lady Redskins, who have battled injuries and youth for much of the season in their second year in Class AA.
“The team has played well over the last two games,” Mincey said. “With such a young team, we just want go out and play really hard in this tournament.”
The Region 2-AA tournamentbegan Monday at Toombs County, then finish up this weekend at Brewton-Parker College in Lyons.
It’s unclear whether the weather will put a kink in that plan. Some areas west and north of Bryan County are under various winter weather or ice storm watches.
The Lady Redskins were scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday night against the winner of the Long County-Toombs County game.
The Bryan County boys’ beat Toombs County 71-50 on Monday in a first-round game, but no further information was available.
The Redskins (10-16)were set to play Atkinson County on Tuesday.
