A federal grand jury in Savannah indicted Carl Evan Swain, 43, of Alabama, on charges of first-degree murder in connection with the Nov. 30 death of a Fort Stewart soldier, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, Savannah Office.

The body of Spc. John Joseph Beans Eubank, 29, was found at the Holbrook Pond recreation area on post near Richmond Hill.

The FBI is investigating the case, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A death that occurs within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States is a federal crime. Fort Stewart lies within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
