The first-graders at Richmond Hill Primary School had something special planned for their parents and loved ones in the military on Friday. The teachers and students planned a Veterans’ Day celebration in honor of those who served their country, singing songs and performing choreographed dances as proud family members looked on.
First-grade teacher Jennifer Noel Smith said many of the 6- and 7-year-old students had recently welcomed a parent home from overseas, making the day all the more special for everyone involved.
“A lot of the students belong to military families, and because of that I think they enjoy the celebration of their parent,” said Noel-Smith. “And for those that don’t have a parent here today, they know that what they’re doing makes them a hero.”
RHPS organized two performances on Friday. The first was a military-only event welcoming all military families past and present, as well as any service men and women who wished to attend.
Among other songs, the boys and girls performed a rendition of “America the Beautiful” and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” The Richmond Hill High School JROTC also took part in the festivities, helping the first-graders retire their colors at the end of the ceremony.
Maj. Jeff Wilson and his wife Lauren Wilson seemed proud to see their daughter, Mary, take part in the event.
“It’s kind of touching seeing the kids sing about our country, especially given what our family has been through and all of the other families here,” said Jeff Wilson. “It’s so wonderful to see everyone’s support.”
The school continued its show of support for veterans with a second performance Friday afternoon for all parents and family members.
