Heartbreaker for BCHS
Bryan County High School fell 7-6 to host Berrien County in the third and deciding game of a best-of-three series on Thursday in Nashville in the second round of the state Class AA softall tournament. The loss ended the Lady Redskins’ season at 22-14. The Lady Redskins won the opener of the series 4-2 on Wednesday, but fell 9-4 in the second game.
Berrien advances to play Calhoun.

JV races to top, Wildcats win home meet
Richmond Hill High School coach Levi Sybert gave his JV runners a shot at getting some varsity experience Tuesday at Wayne County and they ran with it.
Running against varsity runners from other schools, RHHS’ Jackie Buelow was among 15 Wildcat JV runners to set personal records.
Buelow finished eighth overall in the girls’ race, turning in a time of 22 minutes, 3 seconds in the 3.2 miles course to pace the Lady Wildcats to a second-place finish. Also faring well for RHHS in the girls race were Nadia Gaines, Kiana Jackson, Leah Infinger, Mann Coleman, Savi WIlliams, Catherin Willis and Abby Eichorn.
All turned in personal bests.
In the boys’ race, Caleb Carter was the top finishing Wildcat with a time of 18:24, also a personal best. Zack Jones, Carmelo Marin, Dan Zoufal, Nathaniel Ayers, Joe Bardsley, and Jacob Jones were top finishers for RHHS and eighth-grade runner Riley Franzel also managed a personal best.
Sybert said he left varsity runners at home to prepare for the upcoming Region 3-AAAAA meet and state.
“The JV team did awesome,” Sybert said in an email. “Lots of PRs and the girls JV placed second of 12 schools, and the boys JV placed fifth of 12 schools. Since they were racing other teams’ varsity squads, I felt it was a great day and a good sign for the coming years.”
Earlier, the varsity ran away with its annual Fishy XC Invitational at the Richmond Hill Fish Hatchery. Standouts Amanda Elliott and Corey Jones took first in their respective events.
Also faring well in the girls’ race were Rachel Hammesfahr, who took sixth, and Emily Hollowell, who placed ninth. Alycia Ussery, Alexis Arai, Chloe Giorgiani and Rachel Shepherd also ran well for the Lady Wildcats.
In the boys’ race, Tanner Hicks placed fourth. Ryan Donna, Zarrius Walker, Kevin Zhu, Michael Wells and Caleb Carter also competed.
