Bryan County High School quarterback Jeremy McClendon called the Redskins' triple overtime 34-27 win over Toombs County in Lyons a character builder.
"We came together as a team," said the junior, who ran for two TDS and also threw for 86 yards and two touchdowns — one to Raekwon Love, the other to back Damion Dixon.
Senior two-way standout Nick Scott, who finished with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries while also registering 17 tackles, second behind the 19 stops each registered by Dixon and Domique Mock, said the win was a result of players doing what they're supposed to do and being where they're supposed to be.
"We made sure everybody knew what they were doing and making sure they were doing their job," he said. "Don’t worry about making individual plays, make them as a whole team.”
Coach Mark Wilson said the victory, which improved BCHS to 2-0 and 1-0 in Region 2-AA, was a combination of good game planning, good execution and a team that refused to quit.
"When we got it into overtime the kids just fought hard," he said, crediting Dominique Mock and Marcus Johnson for causing a turnover in the final overtime period to seal the Redskins' second win of the season and set up Friday night’s home contest against Jeff Davis.
The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 after suffering a 33-27 loss to Telfair County last week. They opened the season with an 18-0 win over Atkinson County.
Last season, Bryan County blanked Jeff Davis 29-0, but McClendon said the Redskins can’t look at what happened last year.
“We can’t go into any game thinking it’s an automatic win,” he said. “We’ve got to play every game like it’s our last game and biggest test.”
And like any good quarterback, McClendon also gave credit to the team’s offensive line.
“They’re strong, they’re workhorses,” he said. “They’re always working. We can’t do it without them.”
Notes: With All-Region kicker Ty Wilson sidelined, senior soccer player Terry Hardy went 4-for-4 on extra points against Toombs. Scott and Dixon combined for five tackles for losses. Mock had two tackles for a loss and Johnson and Aaron Wells also had tackles for a loss. Love had two catches for 36 yards and the score and Dixon hauled in three passes for 36 yards and the score. Kajana Dixon finished with 63 all purpose yards while also punting for the Redskins.
