“We had so much fun, we have decided to do it again!” say the volunteers of the Richmond Hill Garden Club.
So on Sept. 24, the Green Thumb Kids planting booth will return to J.F. Gregory Park for a second visit to the farmers market. We extend our thanks to Angus McLeod for inviting us back to the farmers market, and to Paula Bashlor of The Secret Gardens for providing new and interesting plants for the kids to work with.
Green Thumb Kids is a free event designed to help children develop a love, respect and understanding of how nature works by gardening. We feel that opportunities like this can produce benefits that last a lifetime. Gardening is an excellent way for children to explore nature and the plant world through hands-on learning.
Whether you live in a home with a yard, or an apartment with a balcony, or only have a sunny window, you can successfully grow plants, flowers and vegetables in pots and containers. A container garden can be a quick and easy way to begin gardening.
Our club members are eager to help you with any gardening questions you may have, and we welcome visitors to our monthly meetings at the John W. Stevens Wetlands Education Center in J.F. Gregory Park. We meet at 10 a.m. monthly on the second Wednesday from September through May. Please check our Facebook page for speakers and events. Whether you are new to the area or a long-time resident, our meetings are a great way to make new friends and connections in Richmond Hill.
We will also have a free “floating pumpkin” game for young children to try out at the Sept. 24 Green Thumb Kids event. This will give kids a taste of the fun in store for them at the annual Pumpkin Patch coming to J.F. Gregory Park on Oct. 5. In addition to a large number of pumpkins and mums for sale, there will be great photo opportunities for families, kid-friendly games and activities, as well as baked goods to enjoy.
So please come join the Richmond Hill Garden Club from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 for the Green Thumb Kids booth at the farmers market, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4 for a fun-filled morning at the Pumpkin Patch.
