Richmond Hill will have a contested election in November after challenger Johnny Murphy qualified Friday afternoon to run for the Post 1 seat currently held by council member Van Hunter.
Murphy is a developer and publisher who launched Richmond Hill Reflections magazine and the Richmond Hill GA Live website. He currently serves on the city’s appointed Architectural Review Board, which was created in June.
“I think part of public service is giving back to the community. I’ve done a lot of that, but not in an elected position, and I think my experience in planning makes me well qualified to participate in the direction our community grows in the future,” Murphy said.
Murphy said he’s pushing for high paying jobs so “our children can come back and raise families here.”
Also qualifying Friday was incumbent Post 2 council member Russ Carpenter, a government teacher at Richmond Hill High School. He is unopposed.
Hunter and incumbent mayor Harold Fowler qualified earlier this week.
Fowler, a former councilman and a veteran, is also unopposed. Fowler, who is retired from the Department of Labor, is running for a second and final term as mayor after helping change the city charter to limit the office to no more than two consecutive terms.
He announced his candidacy in late May.
Hunter, a self-employed veteran, is running for a second consecutive term and his third term overall on council. Both he and Carpenter announced their candidacy earlier this summer.
