A team of students from Carver Elementary School has earned a trip to the annual Stock Market Game Awards Luncheon in Atlanta.
The team of Samantha Condroski, Ian Malloy, Neal McFadden and Jianna Robbins recently won the fall trading session of the Stock Market Game for the Bryan County Schools.
Advised by their teacher, Teresa Caldwell, the students took a hypothetical start-up investment of $100,000 and in 10 weeks turned it into a portfolio with a value of $102,080.
The Carver Elementary team is invited to the May 7 luncheon at the Georgia Freight Depot, where more than 600 students, teachers and parents will gather to recognize winning teams from across the state.
State School Superintendent John Barge will offer congratulations and the keynote speaker will be Geri Thomas, Georgia markets president for Bank of America
Georgia’s third- through 12th-grade students participate in the program, which uses equity markets to show economics in action.
More than 35,000 students in public and independent schools participate in the Stock Market Game in Georgia each year in fall and spring competitions, according to a news release.
Beginning with a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio, teams of up to five students use math, language and skills  learned in other classes to research publicly-traded companies on the Internet, read business news and crunch numbers to figure out which businesses and industries are likely to do well in the current economy.
