Richmond Hill High School’s loss to Glynn Academy in the first round of the girls’ 3-AAAAA basketball tournament on Thursday night didn’t just end the Lady Wildcats’ season.

It also spelled the end of coach Elizabeth Bennett’s six years reign as the team’s head coach.

Bennett, who coached her team to a 24-3 mark and Region 2-AAAA title last season and was 88-74 overall in her time as head coach, was recently made assistant principal at Richmond Hill Middle School.

"Basketball has been my life for many years and defined me in many ways," she said. "But I am excited about the program we built and the level of players, both as young women and as athletes, that we helped develop."

Bennett said she’ll look back fondly on her time as the Lady Wildcats’ head coach.

"Reflecting on my six years here I will always be grateful for the relationships that I was able to build with my girls, their parents and other coaches," she said.

Coaches work long hours and Bennett is married to Richmond Hill High School baseball coach Stacy Bennett. They have one young child.

"This change is a good thing for my family and myself but (it is) nonetheless hard," she said. "I am beyond grateful for those who gave me the opportunity to do what I love for so many years."

A successor hasn’t been named.
