Four Richmond Hill High School students have received one of the top honors high school musicians can get after they were selected to the Georgia Music Educators Association All State Band.

Senior Emma Morris, sophomore Cameron Brooks, sophomore Zach Bynum and freshman DaMarcus Patterson were all recently selected out of hundreds of student musicians across the state, according to Richmond Hill High School Band Director Dr. Daniel Kiene.

“All state band membership means that these students are the best of the best,” Kiene explained. “They competed at the district level against over 500 students just to get to the second round of auditions, held in Houston County, to compete with over a thousand students for spots in the all state band.  These students were from all of Georgia, not just the southern half or the east, but the entire state and every band program in the state.”

Additionally, 36 band members from RHHS were selected to the GMEA District Honor Band, Kiene said. Different from the All State Band, District Honor Band is made up of students from the southeastern part of Georgia who score the highest in the first round of auditions for All State Band.

“We make preparing for the auditions a year round thing,” Kiene said. “We work on the scales and required pieces as part of our class, and we strongly encourage the kids to sign up to audition.

“It is a matter of pride for these kids that we do place so many students in the honor band.  Also, our parents support the students in making sure that they practice and prepare and they make the sacrifices required to get the kids to the auditions.”
