The family of Wayne County High School basketball standout Shaquille Elijah Morgan, 18, attended a quiet ceremony Monday in which several hundred white balloons were released in honor of his memory.

Morgan, the son of Jesup police detective Perry Morgan, was killed after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon.

According to news accounts, the investigation into his death is ongoing, but it appears Morgan was walking along the tracks near the First Street overpass.

The reports say Morgan was wearing headphones and did not notice the train until it was right upon him. The train’s engineer reported he activated the emergency brakes, blew the horn and did everything possible to get Morgan’s attention.

The engineer also reported that Morgan stumbled into the path of the train.

According to the Press Sentinel, the senior scored more than 1,000 points in his high-school career and led the team in scoring in his final game Friday night against South Effingham.

At Monday’s ceremony, many attendees wore bowties — a signature of Morgan’s style — in honor of his memory.

Funeral arrangements are being planned.
