A budget that caps the city’s contribution to the Richmond Hill City Center was approved by the city council on Thursday during its first meeting of the year in City Hall.

The budget, which was originally disapproved in December, was passed 3-0 with council member Van Hunter absent.

According to City Manager Chris Lovell, the City Center’s budget limits the city’s contribution to roughly $140,000 of hotel/motel tax the center already receives. The previous budget, Lovell said, asked that the city contribute around $180,000.

He explained that under the previous budget, costs that weren’t covered by the hotel/motel tax would be made up from the city’s general fund.

Lovell said capping the contribution at $140,000 of hotel/motel tax dollars means the city is not at risk for anything above that, requiring South Carolina-based The Wilderman Group, the management company that operates the center, to cover its own losses.
