The United Way of Bryan County’s Shepherd’s Supper program recently received a boost from a North Bryan Church.
Members of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Pembroke recently rallied together to raise $500 to donate to the program that serves a meal each Thursday to about 100 seniors and people with disabilities in the North Bryan area.
Angie Miller and Dave Williams, Shepherd’s Supper volunteers and members of the church, brought the fundraising request to church members after volunteering with the effort.
“Both myself and Angie Miller volunteer for the Shepherd’s Supper, and we basically saw there was a need,” said Williams, who delivers about 30 meals a week with the program.  “We want to make sure the seniors get not only a nutritious meal, but also get something they would enjoy.”
Miller was on hand Thursday to donate the check to United Way of Bryan County Director Kristi Cox during the program’s weekly delivery. She said raising the money was easy and it was all donated by church members.
“Our church happens to be a very community-oriented church, and we actually do different fundraisers for all different types of community activities,” Williams added. “But our number one goal is to support the community, and all it had to take was a word from us saying this was something the community needed. We were able to raise the money in no time at all, one Sunday actually.”
Cox said the organization is very thankful for the donation.
“We definitely appreciate it,” Cox said. “The need for food assistance has grown so much just since I started and this is a tremendous blessing.”
Local residents like Harry Mayes look forward to the meal each week. Mayes described the meal delivery as “perfect,” and said the people who deliver the meals are friendly. His favorite meal is the baked chicken, although he likes “most all” of the food the supper provides.
Edna M. Love also enjoys the meals each week. She said her favorite meal is the beef vegetable soup, although she also enjoys seeing the smiling faces of the deliverers.
“I think they’re doing a wonderful job,” Love said. “A lot of people wouldn’t have anything if they didn’t do it.”
