Richmond Hill High School had a top-notch kicker in right-footed kicker Canon Rooker, a senior who is bound for Middle Tennessee State University on a football scholarship. He connected on seven field goals with a long of 49. Five out of every six kickoffs from Rooker wound up in the end zone, unreturnable.

Welcome to the first Bryan County News All-County football team, made up of players from Bryan County High School and Richmond Hill High School.

If you follow local prep football, then you should be familiar with many of the players who made this team.

They include two-time McDonald’s/BCN Player of the Year Nick Scott, a tough, physical competitor who played both ways for the Redskins again in 2012 and did so at an incredibly high level.

Also included are the McDonald’s/BCN Players of the Year for Richmond Hill, Dominique Allen and David Katzman.

Ordinarily, we select only one player of the year for each school, but their combined performance made the Wildcats nearly unstoppable for much of the season and made it impossible to pick one over the other.

One will also note that we have two kickers, Richmond Hill senior Canon Rooker and Bryan County junior Ty Wilson. Both are among the best in the area, as evidenced by not only their statistics, but also by their being picked to their respective All-Region teams.

No team is perfect, however, and there may be some who will feel they should have been included in this team.

We won’t argue. We will note that selections were made by the BCN with as much input from coaches as we could get.

The team was adapted to make room for additional offensive and defensive linemen — those who tend to toil in obscurity — and linebackers, largely because there were a large number of deserving players in those positions on both ends of the county. We also ran with a nickel package in the defensive backfield, picking five DBs.

On the flip side, the offensive backfield and receivers were limited to those whose statistics lent weight to their impact on the field. For example, both All-County running backs are 1,000 yard rushers, no small feat in a 10-game regular season.
