Holiday spirit filled the Richmond Hill Senior Center on Wednesday when dozens of senior citizens, county officials, volunteers and others gathered for the third annual Christmas party and oyster roast.
Mary Jane Cobb was on hand for the festivities. Cobb has been coming to the senior center for some time now and said she loves the people.
“I look forward to it, it’s a good place for seniors,” she said. “All the people here are friendly, we love each other and that’s what it’s all about.”
She said the party was a “wonderful time,” adding she really enjoyed the oysters.
“My favorite part is when we give out all the presents — I like that best,” Cobb said.
She said she is ready for Christmas, and although her family isn’t near, she said she was thankful she will be able to see her grandson before he goes to Afghanistan next month.
Gracie Greene, who goes to the center often and enjoys quilting there, was also enjoying the festivities
“I enjoyed eating and having fun,” she said. “I’m excited about the gift exchange — that’s a special part.”
Center Director Brenda Garrett said by the end of the party, three bushels of oysters had been eaten, along with many desserts, dips, meats and other treats. She said she started the tradition when she first took the job there three years ago.
“I started this the first year I got the job and it’s just been an annual thing,” she said. “It’s just a treat for them, they usually don’t get the opportunity to eat oysters.”
