What is your favorite Christmas song? Which one is your least favorite? The many songs of Christmas are memorable in their own way. I enjoy most of them. I admit that the song “Christmas Shoes” does not make my favorites list. I turn it off as soon as I hear the introduction. You see, it came out the year my mother died. I simply cannot listen to that song.

Speaking of my mom, all of her grandchildren were strictly forbidden to sing “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.” She made it abundantly clear that she did not find anything at all humorous about that song. All five grandchildren (it probably would not surprise you to know that four of them were boys) got a kick out of humming it in her presence just to see her reaction. Then they would hug her and tell her they loved her.

I think if I were to start a top 10 list of my favorite Christmas songs, I would end up with a few pages of titles. I simply cannot stop at 10. Old favorites like “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger” and “O Holy Night” cannot be forgotten.

I enjoy many newer songs, too. And then there are the so-called “secular” favorites like, “The Christmas Song.” And having lived 14 years in the upper Midwest, Christmas was not complete until I heard, “Christmas in Dixie.”

But I think my favorite Christmas song to hear on the radio is “Carol of the Bells” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Have you heard it? Anytime it is on you can be certain that I turn it up and move with the beat. What a great rendition of a great song! And I know the words, and realize that they truly point to the birth of the savior.

Whatever song is your favorite, I hope that you hear it soon. I hope that it will help you get into the Christmas spirit. And the Christmas spirit is about this one fact: God became flesh and dwelt among us. That is the message of Christmas that matters the most. He is with us. Because of Christmas, we can know the Lord.

I hope during this special time of year you will know him in a special way. He is truly good.

It is good to be his child.
