Pembroke is one of five cities in Georgia recently chosen to participate in the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) program — a three-year state program that helps leaders address housing needs in their community.
According to Sharroll Fanslau, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority, the program will assist the city’s housing team, which consists of community leaders, local builders, lawyers, bankers and more, find funding to improve existing houses in the community, as well as establish new housing and create a more cohesive look for the community.
“It’s to help with everything from renovation or demolishing those homes that are not livable to brand new construction,” Fanslau said.
During the three-year program, each community housing team receives facilitation, instruction and technical assistance as they design and implement a housing program to improve both the quality of life of its citizens and the communities’ economic conditions.
