A crew is working this week to extract a sunken barge from the Medway River.

Eastern District firefighter Joe Cannon was on the scene Monday as Paul Krebs Construction crew members worked to pull a crane off the Stafford Marine Construction dock-building barge, which the crew hopes to extract this week.

On Monday, the crew tried several times with three 84,000-pound excavators to draw the 174,000-pound crane to shore.

Tuesday morning, Cannon said the crew got the crane on the crest of a hill, but would have to delay the next step until Wednesday due to equipment issues.

The Stafford Marine Construction crane went down about one year and eight months ago, Cannon said. It was submerged near a Brigantine-Dunmore Road property owned by Alice Stevens Fillingame, according to the Liberty County Property Information System online.
