After losing last season’s Southeast Region championship by one run, the Bryan County Middle School softball team set its sites on winning the crown in 2012.
Mission accomplished.
The Lady Redskins won the Southeast Region crown Oct. 12, capping a perfect regular season with a 9-2 win over Glennville Middle School.
“The Lady Redskins set a goal this season to be region nchampions and were committed to the goal,” said BCMS coach Kerry Swindell. “They used their talent and love of the game to reach the goal. They believed in themselves and with hard work and determination they reached the goal of region champs.”
They did it with plenty of offense, a lot of pitching and some serious defense.
Against Glennville, Shelby Barfield pitched a no hitter for the Lady Redskins (11-0). She struck out four and walked one.
The win put an exclamation point on a season in which the Lady Redskins outscored opponents 118-5 and compiled a team batting average of .486.
Barfield led the way with an average of .692. Alayna Williams hit .600, Julianne Brown batted .556 and both Alyssa Edwards and Jesse Wilkes both hit .500.
