The kick is up and it’s ....good!!

At least that’s the way it is the majority of the time when Bryan County High School kicker Ty Wilson puts his southpaw foot into the ball for an extra-point or field goal under the Friday night football lights.

Wilson, a junior on the Redskins football team, is a valuable commodity for the Bryan County squad and on his way to becoming one of the best kickers this area has seen.

Wilson, who has already received letters of interest from D-1 schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and Georgia Tech, can be found on Friday night at the end of the bench away from the other players, kicking into a net in order to stay loose and ready for whenever his time to shine may come — and so far this year

year Wilson is shining bright.

I caught up with Wilson at a recent Redskins practice to get to know more about him and came away with a smile on my face as I met a motivated and determined young man.

Q:

How long have you been a kicker ?

A:

I only started kicking last year because my dad (Coach Mark Wilson) wanted me to try it. I played soccer when I was little and he thought I should try kicking a football so I did and I had a strong leg and it just all ‘clicked’ and has worked out well so far.

Q:

What do you feel is the key to kicking accurately ?

A:

Last year I had some accuracy problems and have been working with a kicking coach out of Richmond Hill and we have worked on my steps, planting my feet, and making sure my hips are turned correctly. All those things are important for accuracy.

Q:

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions that you do for every game ?

A:

Yes, I have a small headband and some rubber bands I wear on my wrist and I put those inside my sock for "good luck: and it seems to be working so far.  I also pray and ask God to help me and to be with me cause I know He will.

Q:

What are your plans after high school?

A:

I want to go to a D-1 school and play football and then hopefully make it into the NFL as a kicker. That’s my dream.. If I can’t do that then I would like to be a coach like my dad.

Q:

What is your favorite college football team?

A:

I guess I would have to say Tennessee since my dad is from there and my grandparents always liked Tennessee so I guess it would be them.

Q:

What do you do in your leisure time ?

A:

I usually just hang out with friends or with family and watch football on TF.

Q:

What is your favorite movie?

A:

"Remember the Titans." I really like that movie.

Q:

What is your favorite type of music?

A:

Rap.

Q:

What is your favorite food?

A:

Chicken, it has to be chicken. That is all I eat.

 Q:

What is your favorite place to eat?

A:

Zaxby’s. Because they have chicken.

Q:

Do you have any nicknames?

A:

Some people call me Ty-weezy because I like to rap and that is my rapping nickname.

Q:

Do  you have a motto that you try to live by?

A:

Just never give up. If you want something then give it all you have to get it. I want to be a kicker in the NFL and I’m going to keep working hard and hopefully I’ll get there. I also try and live each day to the fullest, like it was my last.
