“Pete the Cat” found his way into several South Bryan pre-kindergarten classrooms this week when state legislators Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, and Sen. Buddy Carter, R-Pooler, visited students in honor of Georgia Pre-K Week.
Students at the Richmond Hill Pre-K Center welcomed Stephens on Thursday as he made his way around to visit with the 4-year-olds. He took a few minutes to sit down with Kerry Bayens’ class and read “Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School Shoes” to the group of energetic students.
Stephens said he enjoyed visiting with the students, and was amazed at how attentive they were.
“I’m amazed that these 4-year-olds, No. 1, can have an attention span to listen — every single class I went to was very, very orderly and very concise,” he said. “The teacher was very regimented with a schedule to go through their daily plan, and that is not something that I got until I was in probably the second grade.”
He added it is important to him to visit with pre-K students because of how vital the program is to jump start children’s learning process.
“Pre-K is the start of the rest of their life and their learning scenarios, and it’s important for me as a funder of pre-K through the Georgia Lottery to make sure that I see the kids and see what they’re doing, see what they’re learning and see the foundation they’re building,” Stephens said. “So it’s a big deal and whenever we have to make these decisions on where we’re going to spend our money — you can’t get around seeing it first hand, and that’s why I’m here.”
