Two South Bryan residents will face off on Nov. 6 in a special election for the District 4 seat on the Bryan County Board of Education.
Jeff Morton and Marianne Smith qualified last month to finish the unexpired term of board member Joe Pecenka. Pecenka, a Republican, stepped down from the District 4 seat to run for the vice chairman seat. He was uncontested in the July primary election and faces no Democrat or independent candidate in the general election.
Morton, who currently holds the vice chairman seat that expires Dec. 31, said in a prepared statement he has enjoyed serving on the school board.
“I have learned a tremendous amount over the past six years and have enjoyed serving on the school board,” he said. “I will continue to listen to the concerns of the citizens that I represent. I do not have all the answers to the issues that affect our schools, but I promise to get as much information as possible and make my decision based on what is best for the children and our community.”
Morton, who has lived in Bryan County for more than 20 years and has raised two children here, said “having a top notch school system is paramount to the overall quality of life” for Bryan County residents.
“I feel that my six years of experience on the school board and my background in banking make me the most qualified candidate for this position,” he said. “I would like to thank all of the people that have supported and encouraged me in the past, and I look forward to serving Bryan County in the future.”
Smith was unable to be reached by presstime.
While both Morton and Smith qualified as Republican candidates, according to County Elections Superintendent Sam Davis, voters will see both names on the Nov. 6 ballot because it is a special election.
