Richmond Hill has again been formally recognized by a national nonprofit as a Playful City USA community.

KaBOOM!, a nonprofit dedicated to saving play spaces for children, named Richmond Hill in its 2012 list of cities that receive recognition for innovating programs to keep children active, according to a press release. KaBOOM!’s goal is to have places to play within walking distance of every child in the country.

Richmond Hill is one of 12 cities in Georgia to receive the honor and has received designation for the past three years.

Since first being designated as a Playful City, Richmond Hill has instituted an annual Play Day to encourage parents and children to take in recreational activities at J.F. Gregory Park.

This year’s Play Day is set for June 30.

In addition, the city provided more activities for children during annual celebrations like the annual chili cook-off and the Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival.

Some of the previous activities the city has provided for children included hayrides, fishing, children’s games and inflatable bouncy houses.

In addition to having a Play Day, Richmond Hill also has a Play Board. The Play Board is responsible for making sure that community events held in the city have opportunities for children to participate in activities, to ensure the city continues to upgrade older parks and install new parks if possible.

Playful City USA is sponsored by The Humana Foundation.
