The Dolphin Project hosted a Dolphins and Desserts social May 19 featuring Kevin Carroll, the internationally renowned creator of the prosthetic tail for Winter the dolphin as featured in the movie “Dolphin Tale.”

The first half of Carroll’s program featured soldiers at Hanger’s Boot Camp learning how to adjust to artificial limbs after losing their legs in battle. While Hanger is noted for helping soldiers, Carroll, who has been devoted to helping people with prosthetics for more than 30 years, noted that more than 80 percent of its work is with people who have lost limbs from diabetes. Young women are particularly at risk of amputation due to meningitis, according to Carroll.

The portion of Carroll’s presentation about Winter also was inspiring and entertaining. Through his work with Winter, an amazing fabric was developed called Winter’s Gel, which is used worldwide on human amputees to protect their skin against the mechanics of the prosthetics.

A silent auction featuring art from Wyland and Guy Harvey was held and raised funding for dolphin research.
