Traffic flows Tuesday afternoon through the railroad crossing on Ford Avenue in Richmond Hill. But that will come to a halt at 8 a.m. Saturday through May 23, when the crossing will be closed and motorists will be forced to detour around the city.

Residents who use Ford Avenue east of Highway 17 to get in and out of the city will have to add a few minutes and a few miles to their travel time for a few days beginning Saturday.
That’s because the railroad crossing on Ford Avenue/Highway 144 between Richard R. Davis Drive and Frances Meeks Way will be closed from 8 a.m. Saturday through May 22.
According to a press release from the Georgia Department of Transportation, CSX Transportation has scheduled improvements for the crossing, so motorists will be forced to use alternative routes to navigate the city.
Highway 144 will remain open to local traffic up to the work zone.
The detour routes will be signed as follows:

For those heading eastbound on Highway 144:
• Detour right on Highway 17 south to Harris Trail Road and turn left on Harris Trail.
• Truck traffic will travel two miles on Harris Trail to turn left on Timber Trail Road and travel one mile north back to Highway 144.
• Passenger vehicles will travel two miles farther on Harris Trail to turn left on Port Royal Road and travel 1.5 miles north back to Highway 144 where the detour ends.

For those heading westbound on Highway 144:
• Passenger vehicles will detour left on Port Royal Road, travel 1.5 miles and turn right on Harris Trail Road.
• Truck traffic will travel two miles farther on Highway 144 to left on Timber Trail Road, travel one mile south and turn right on Harris Trail.
• All traffic will travel east on Harris Trail to Highway 17, turn right and travel 1.42 miles north to Highway 144 where the detour ends.
