Former Richmond Hill Mayor Richard Davis is heading up efforts to bring back a large American flag that once flew at the foot of the viaduct on Highway 17 south in Richmond Hill.
The flag hasn’t flown in that spot for about a year and a half now, Davis said, which led him to start the “Fly the Flag Fund” in order to bring Old Glory back for South Bryan residents to enjoy.
“I’ve had a lot of comments about it and a lot of people miss it,” Davis said. “It’s a big loss.”
Each flag costs around $1,400, he said, noting he has received several donations including one of $500, and several $100 donations. He said he would be very appreciative of anyone who contributes to the cause.
Davis has set up an account at Bryan Bank and Trust for the Fly the Flag Fund. His wish is that Richmond Hill and South Bryan residents make donations to help keep the stars and stripes waving over the city.
“I’d like to encourage everyone who enjoys seeing the flag flying to graciously contribute to it,” he said. “There will be some upkeep on it. Just buying the flags is $3,000 per year and I think that’s an insignificant amount of money for all the people who live in Richmond Hill and South Bryan County who love to see the flag fly to contribute to it.”
