Sean Michael Hardy of Richmond Hill has earned the Eagle Scout award, which is the highest advancement award provided by the Boy Scouts of America.
Sean, a senior at Richmond Hill High School, was honored by Troop 527 at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on March 4 at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. Sean began his scouting career as a Tiger Cub associated with Pack 527.  As a Webelos Scout, he obtained his “Arrow of Light Award” and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 527 in March 2005.  Sean earned 22 merit badges, the 50-miler award and the Historic Trails Award.  Sean was inducted in the “Order of Arrow” (Scouting Honor Society) where he is currently a Brotherhood member.
Sean’s leadership positions include senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, scribe, chaplain’s aide, troop guide, patrol leader and quartermaster.  As a member of Troop 527, Sean has attended summer camps from North Georgia to Virginia.   Sean has taken numerous backpacking trips to places such as the Cahutta Wilderness Area, Coosa Back Country Trail and Ocala National Forest.  The pinnacle of Sean’s backpacking experience was a 65 mile hike at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., in 2010 where he experienced blacksmithing, rappelling, skeet shooting, rifle target shooting and burro racing while also enjoying incredible views of landscape and wildlife in the Southern Rocky Mountains.
Sean’s Eagle Scout Leadership Project involved the renovation of the RHUMC’s Ivey West Wing into a 500-square-foot addition to the youth room.  The project’s scope involved structural, sheetrock, electrical, finishing, painting and carpeting to prepare the room for use by the church’s 60-member youth program.  Under Sean’s planning and leadership, volunteers from Troop 527, the church and other Scouts and friends completed the project in two and a half months and accumulated approximately 500 service hours.
In addition to Scouting, Sean’s activities include:
• youth member at RHUMC where he has participated in national and international mission trips
• tuba player and brass captain in the 2011-12 Richmond Hill High School Wildcat Marching and Symphonic Band
• National Honor Society
• Beta Club
Following graduation in May, Sean will spend the summer marching with the drum corps “Spirit of Atlanta” in competitions throughout the United States.  Sean plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology this fall and major in biomedical engineering.
