An afternoon burglary in the Mainstreet Subdivision near the elementary school complex in Richmond Hill caused confusion for some residents Wednesday.

Maj. Michael Albritton with the Richmond Hill Police Department said officials combed the area on foot and using tracking dogs and to search for two suspects in the burglary. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, no arrests had been made and the incident is still under investigation.

Rumors of an intruder or lock down at the schools and of a school shooting at Richmond Hill Middle School are not true, he said.

“We sent an officer (to the schools) as a courtesy and had him notify them and told them use their discretion,” Albritton said.

The RHPD decided to alert the schools in the elementary complex of the incident because some weapons were stolen during the burglary, he said, and the suspects were traveling on foot.

Another reason the schools were alerted of the incident was to address potential concerns for parents.

“If parents see us with tracking dogs and officers on foot canvassing the area, that leads to concern for parents,” Albritton said.

Albritton noted if there was an eminent threat to any school or there was a possibility of an intruder on a campus, the RHPD would lock down the schools.
