Robert Bacot Sr., founder and owner of Kilkenny Marina located off of Highway 144 in South Bryan County, passed away Thursday evening.
Bacot opened Kilkenny Marina in the 1960s according to local fisherman Mark Lewis, who said Bacot was always very good businessman.
“He bought that place back in the 60s and he really enjoyed what he was doing down there on the river,” Lewis said. “He loved to tell stories about buying that place.”
Lewis said he had done business with Bacot for 25 years, and part of what made him a good businessman was that he was always helpful and dependable.
“You could always depend on him to have live shrimp for bait and he or his sons were always on time to put you in at 7 a.m.,” he said. “You didn’t have to worry about him being late.”
Lewis said he never saw Bacot argue with anyone, but noted he would watch out for fisherman who docked there.
“What we always got a kick out of watching somebody throwing a wake—we knew he was going to get on to them,” Lewis said. “He was really just looking out for all the boats there at the dock.”
Local resident Angus McLeod also knew Bacot well and said he was a “great guy.”
“He ran a great marina with a strong hand, had a wealth of information and was a pleasure to talk to,” McLeod said.
