The Richmond Hill Garden Club celebrated Georgia Arbor Day by planting a magnolia tree at Henderson Park.
The idea came from the club’s G Team chairman, Jan Davis, a four-year garden club member. The G Team is a committee within the garden club that is responsible for planting in the community.
“I thought it would be a nice idea to honor our past garden club presidents by planting a magnolia because to me, magnolias have always been such a symbol of Southern strength,” Davis said.
The G Team has been active in the local community, especially at Henderson Park.
“The garden club committed a set amount of money for the landscaping of a plot at Henderson Park,” Davis said. “We started off with the benches and birdhouses.  Later, we added the butterfly garden, azaleas and Southeastern native plants.
“The design has been a collaboration of everyone on the G Team,” Davis added.
The club also was responsible for a raised flower bed with roses around a gazebo at the Bryan County Rehabilitation Center, the landscaping in front of the Richmond Hill Library and a garden at the elementary school.
“The garden club is always looking for ways to beautify and serve our local community,” club president Lori Pommerenck said. “The Henderson Park project has allowed us to work together creatively as a team as well as help to provide a wonderful place for rest and reflection at this family-oriented community park.
The club’s next meeting is at 10 a.m. March 14 at the Wetlands Center at J.F. Gregory Park. Guest speaker Terry Molonari will talk about personal safety.
The March meeting also will include a business display. Club members who are entrepreneurs can create free table displays to showcase their products and services. The event is free and open to the public.
