Richmond Hill High School students celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day at RHHS on Friday.

For about half a day on Friday, some 200 girls at Richmond Hill High School got the chance to climb a rock wall or reel in a classmate pretending to be a fish.
They also could learn a little about kayaking and tennis and roller derby.
It was all part of the school's observance of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark 1972 legislation that opened up the world of sports for women in the U.S.
The event was put together by Dr. Jane Lynes, who can remember a time when there were few opportunities for girls who wanted to play high school sports.
That's why Lynes, an assistant principal at Richmond Hill High School, leads the local celebration of NGWSD each year.
