The Bryan County High School boys' basketball team has made a number of positive strides since last season's one-win campaign.
Saturday night, the Redskins saw how far they still have to go in a 76-36 loss to visiting Portal in a matchup of teams in the same region but different subregions.
"Portal is probably the best team in the entire region right now," BCHS boys' coach Allen Clark said of the Panthers, who play in 3B-A. "And they certainly played like it."
Raekwon Love had a team high nine points and Jaylan Rawls added eight as no Redskin managed to reach double figures against the Panthers, who improved to 16-1 overall and moved into the PrepCountry.com Top 10 this week as well.
But Clark said there is a bright side.
"As tough as our season has been we still have an opportunity to salvage it," he said. "I told the young men after the game that no team on our side, with the exception of Claxton, has an overall winning record, so we aren't the only ones who are struggling."

The girls, meanwhile, knocked off the Lady Panthers 49-36 to improve to 13-4. Three players scored in double figures for Bryan County, led by Diamond Mcgirt’s 15 points and five steals.
Satashala Beasley added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Tiffany Howard contributed 13 points and six steals as the Lady Redskins look to position themselves for a second-straight Region 3-A crown.
“We got the lead early and had a chance to play our freshmen and sophomores a lot in this game,” Lady Redskins’ coach Mario Mincey said.
