Parents, if you want your child to be more successful in school, become even more involved in their schooling. You can make a real difference for the good of your child. "When parents are involved in their children’s educations at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school - and the schools they go to are better" (National Education Association, 2006).

The Bryan County School System has established several channels to encourage parental involvement.

Regular PTO meetings are outlets for parents to see firsthand the good things that are happening in schools across our county. There are opportunities for parents to participate in PTO fundraisers, to volunteer their time, and also to hold leadership positions within the organization.

In addition, BCMS holds a Parent Night twice during the school year. During Parent Night, parents are invited to attend two informational sessions on various topics related to helping your student achieve in school and to share a meal with other families and teachers. During the most recent BCMS Parent Night, a speaker from Ogeechee Technical College spoke with parents, teachers, and students about the opportunities there for continuing education. BCMS has recently established a quarterly School Newsletter. There are several web-based communication tools for parents. The school system has implemented Parent Connect. This site allows parents to view student grades, assignments, attendance information, and discipline information. This is a wonderful tool for parents to stay current with their child’s progress in class. If you have yet to take advantage of this wonderful resource, contact the school office for more information. The district website and individual school website are both great sources of information for upcoming events. Links to teacher email addresses are available on the school website.

The benefits of parental involvement will also extend beyond the realm of educational achievement, and they are many. Studies have shown that students whose parents are more involved in their lives enjoy greater social and emotional development. They are more able to deal with stress, are more satisfied with their lives, are more self-directed, and have more self-control. Young people, whose parents were very involved in their lives, grow up to be more successful as adults, both in their personal and professional lives.

We appreciate all of your past support, and look forward to your continued support of our efforts at Bryan County Middle School. We are working toward the same end, the betterment of your child.

By Bryan County Middle School Principal Debbie Hamm.
