Bryan County High School senior Tiffany Howard wore No. 1 on her jersey playing softball for the Lady Redskins.
She'll stay No. 1 forever, now.
The school is retiring Howard's number at a ceremony on Tuesday night at halftime of the boys' basketball game, softball coach Al Butler announced Friday.
To Butler, the decision to retire Howard's number was an easy one.
"With all that Tiffany has accomplished through her years here, retiring her number is a must," he said.
Among the accomplishments: Howard owns 36 of 49 individual records for fast pitch softball. In many cases, she not only owns the record, but also the second, third and fourth or fifth best marks as well.
Howard also holds state records. She's first and second for the most hits in a season in Class A with 80 and 73, respectively, is first in career hits with 243 and has the single-season stolen base mark of 69.
Howard, an honor roll student and Auburn signee, is the second softball player at BCHS to have her jersey number retired - Jody Hite's No. 15 was retired in 1985.
Butler said he wants to give as many people in Pembroke as possible the opportunity to attend Tuesday's ceremony.
"Tiffany is such an outstanding individual," he said. "She has touched so many peoples' lives in her 17 years in Pembroke, not only through athletics but through her daily interactions with friends, family and the community in general.."
