The Bryan County Board of Commissioners will conduct a second and final reading of an ordinance change regarding landfills during its regular meeting set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the County Administrative Complex in South Bryan.

Atlantic Waste Services, the company hoping to construct a landfill on 268 acres in the Black Creek community of North Bryan, is requesting ordinance amendments that would allow for a landfill to be built on a county road, something that is currently prohibited in the current ordinance, and would lessen the required setbacks between a landfill and a water source from 1,000 feet to 500 feet.

In November, the County Planning and Zoning Commission denied a recommendation that the changes be approved.

Having given Atlantic Waste officials the opportunity to address the board during the November meeting, commissioners are expected to extend the same courtesy Tuesday evening to a citizen group opposed to the planned landfill.
